1966 $100 RED SEAL United States Note!
THIS NOTE IS A 'SPECIMEN' NOTE in which the red inked 'SPECIMEN' words have been lightly erased.
-This note is ungraded and raw-
'SPECIMEN' notes are printed by the US government for the purpose of being given to foreign high state officials and dignitaries so they know what United States paper money looks and feels like. They are always identified by ascending latter serial number...s such as 12345678, as in this note, or as 23456789 as seen on modern notes.
'SPECIMEN' notes used to be illegal to own until very recently where collectors are now allowed to possess them as part of their collections.
Most 'SPECIMEN' notes available to the collector market are lower denomination notes, and rarely do high denomination 'SPECIMEN' notes become available, let alone a RARE non-modern note such as this 1966 $100 Red Seal US Legal Tender Note.
Further, what makes this note even more spectacular is that the RED 'SPECIMEN' words on both the obverse and reverse were lightly erased, making it one that might be solely unique for any 'SPECIMEN' note.
Why is this important? Because, it is likely that the words "SPECIMEN' were erased for the sole purpose of being able to spend the note and allow it to be circulated.
It is important to note that 'SPECIMEN' notes are not legal tender, and by erasing the words "SPECIMEN' would allow the holder to spend the note as "legal tender" without being readily being identified as a non-legal tender 'SPECIMEN' note.
