Ch'ien-Lung is considered one of the most brilliant rulers in Chinese history, specifically as a patron of the arts. He is one of the few Chinese Emperors to abdicate the throne, which he did to honor his father, K'ang Hsi, by ending his reign before it would have exceeded the ...length of his father's reign.
There are two basic series to the Ch'ien-Lung coins. The primary series (the coin on the Left) has the regular Ch'ien-Lung inscription. The second type (exhibited by the coin on the right) is referred to as Shan-Lung commemorative issue, with two upright strokes added to the bottom of the character "Lung, " and is thought to have been struck during the period from his abdication in 1795 to his death in 1799.
