This is for circa 1860, civil war era, single blade pocket scalpel. The blade, marked by the hard to find maker "TILLY", is protected by two tortoiseshell sheets that are connected by a brass pin at each end to form a case. The closed instrument is 8cm long and 12mm at its widest.The blade rotates out from between the shell sheets.There is loss to the edges of the tortoiseshell sheets The instrument has not been cleaned or polished.
