This Gustav Stickley oak “Monk’s Stool” model No. 302 was produced throughout all the years of Gustav Stickley’s production and reached this final form by 1902. It is unsigned, as is common with many surviving examples of the form, and the lack of a brand dates it no later than 1912, after which the branded mark was used on all Gustav Stickley furniture.
The footstool has pinned flared legs joined to rectangular stiles. Pinning is also a feature that disappears by 1912. The... rectangular stiles indicate it was always covered in leather or oilcloth. This footstool is recovered in an antique dark brown to black leather that is in excellent condition.
Overall the piece is structurally sound and all the joints are stable. It possibly has a recoated original finish or old refinish. The reddish-brown color is consistent with “Standard Stickley” pieces from 1905 to 1913. The finishes got lighter from 1913 onward.
