Original Description:
Lot of 28 original 1940s contact sheets, all showing various Hollywood stars and celebrities at the Brown Derby Restaurant (presumably the Hollywood and Vine location, where the stars of that era most often visited.) This collection appears to be an unpublished book. There are 7 carbon copy pages of typewritten caption notes, along with 5 pages of hand written notes, one page even has the notation "in book." These prints are 4 by 5 inch size, 4 photos to each 8 by 10 sheet, making... altogether 111 shots of stars and their families, and other famous people. From various events mentioned in the captions, the latest caption was written in 1949, some appear to have been penned a little earlier. The photos seem to date originally from 1939 to 1949, though this set of prints was probably all made sometime in 1949.
I do not know who the photographer/author is for sure, there is no name associated with this lot, no back stamps on any of the sheets. I was unable to get a coherent story from the North Hollywood folks I purchased this large collection from; they had gotten it from a neighbor, who before them had gotten it from either a photographer's estate, or from the estate of darkroom technician who worked with photographers back in the day. They just couldn't provide any definite information, in fact the couple's stories differed from each other. (I do have an idea of who the photographer might be, but since I can not be 100% sure I won't mention it. This 28 contact sheet lot is only part of the collection purchased that day, other portions did have a name associated with it. But I can't be sure if the entire collection is from the same photographer or not.)
These are all in pretty good condition. They have some amount of edge and corner wear, a few have a crease or two and/or a short closed tear, and/or some light surface scratches or other wear. All 28 sheets are shown in the gallery, with 2 closeups shown in the final frame.
Stars include: Tyrone Power, Jeanette MacDonald, Dorothy Lamour, George Burns, Joan Fontaine, Robert Taylor, Eddie Cantor, Jimmy Durante, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, Joan Blondell, Jack Benny, George Jessel, Jackie Coogan, Betty Grable, Lupe Vélez, Fred MacMurray, George Burns, Fred Astaire, George Raft, Norma Shearer, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, James Stewart, Olivia DeHavilland, Bob Hope, Loretta Young, Ann Sheridan, Boris Karloff, Mary Pickford, Robert Stack, Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, Barbara Stanwyck, Edgar Bergen, Claudette Colbert, Lana Turner, Artie Shaw, Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman, Bing Crosby, Milton Berle, Mary Astor, Harpo Marx, Zeppo Marx, June Lockhart, Ida Lupino, Alan Ladd, William Bendix, Dinah Shore, Shirley Temple, William Holden, Ozzie Nelson and wife Harriet Hilliard, Burt Lancaster, Gregory Peck, Roddy MacDowall, Peter Lorre and more.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I have transcribed the notes as best I could. The carbon copies were difficult to read, especially celebrity names that I'm not familiar with. There are some misspellings in the notes, and I've probably introduced some new misspellings myself. The collection of photos and typewritten notes matches up almost completely, there are no missing contact sheets. The hand written notes appear to be earlier and vary more. For instance, in the hand written notes Sinatra is mentioned, along with Dean Martin and Jayne Mansfield, but for some reason those names were all crossed out.
Brown Derby captions:
7) Wallace Beery and his wife dine at the Brown Derby after just returning from Europe. (Beery has since been divorced.)
17) Happy over losing twenty excess pounds, comedian Jack Oakie rips into the dessert of his wife, the former Venita Varden, as they dine together at the Brown Derby restaurant. (Since this picture Oakie regained doubly the twenty pounds he lost, has been divorced, and Miss Varden has perished in a fire about a year ago.)
19) Al Jolson, the famous "Mammy" singer of stage, screen ad radio, given Emily Post a few pointers on chow main consumption as he dines with his wife, the former Ruby Keeler, at the Brown Derby. (Everyone is fully aware of Jolson's great comeback which he enjoyed several years after being divorced from Miss Keeler. Both have been remarried.)
27) Walter Wagner, one of Hollywood's most outstanding independant producers, dines at the Brown Derby with his most glamorous star, Joan Bennett. (One of the Hollywood couples that believe in marriage, Wanger (sp) and Miss Bennett are one of Hollywood's outstanding families having several children. Miss Bennett is a grandmother today.)
33) Wedding bells near? This is the question all Hollywood is asking Janet Gaynor and Tyrone Power, famous film stars, who are seen constantly together. They are shown here leaving the Brown Derby. Since Power and Sonja Henie's romance died, he and Miss Gaynor are seen constantly together. (Soon after this photo this romance died and Tyrone married Annabella. He has since divorced Annabella and just recently married Linda Christian in Europe.)
43) Irene Dunne, Gene Raymond, Mrs. Raymond, Jeanette MacDonald to her fans, snapped while leaving the Brown Derby. (Miss Dunne and the Raymonds are still the best of friends and except for the three of them winning more fans and fortune time has not changed.)
50) Joel McCrea, one of Hollywood's most popular young stars, lunches at the Brown Derby with Alma Lloyd,  daughter of director Frank Lloyd. (McCrea, who has enjoyed a very successful marriage with Frances Dee,  spends most of his time on his San Fernando Valley ranch with his wife and family and is rarely seen in Hollywood except when working.)
51) It was Pat O'Brian's birthday and he and the Mrs. celebrated with a dinner at the Derby. (Except for some gray hairs and some extra pounds Pat hasn't changed very much, although his family has grown. His latest addition is a daughter Brigid, the first child born to the O'Brians. She is now four. The O'Brians have another son and daughter, both of whom are adopted.)
54) Mischa Auer, who cavorts through pictures, usually stealing them and (???????) the audience in gales of laughter, is not the only comic in the Auer family. At the Brown Derby cafe Mr. Auer (left) and Madam Leopold Auer, Mischa's aunt, do their daily job of eating Mischa's dessert for him. (The Auers have disapeared from the Hollywood scene)
58) Dorothy Lamour, screen siren, offers George Burns, radio comedian, a cigarette as they wait for their luncheon at the Brown Derby. Incidentally, both Dorothy and George are happily married, both well known on the radio and in pictures. (Except for family changes this caption could read the same)
60) Conrad Nagel and Joan Fontaine are pictured leaving the Brown Derby. Nagel is one of the film colony's veteran actors and Joan a new-comer. (Most of Nagel's acting now being done practically exclusively for radio; however, Miss Fontaine, sister of Olivia De Havilland, has gone over very big and is one of filmland's top female stars. She is married to William Dealer and is the mother of a baby girl.)
65) [Not included in notes. Unrecognized man and woman.]
66) Phil Reagan and Robert Taylor discuss an article in the newspaper while lunching at the Derby. (Phil has dropped out of the public eye since this picture was taken while Rob, who has married Barbara Stanwyck,  gone through the war as a naval officer, and come back to the screen as popular as ever.)
70) Perpetual seventh heaven. Reportedly Hollywood's happiest married couple are Charles Farrell and Mr. Farrell, the former Virginia Valli, pictured here at the Brown Derby. Farrell's greatest success was "Seventh Heaven." (The Farrells are still happily married, although Charles has retired from the screen. Farrell owns and heads two of the biggest resorts in California - The Racquet Club at Palm Springs and Toyon Bay on Catalina Island.)
73) "If Ida could see me now, " says Eddie Cantor as he gives Ruby Keeler Jolson and her sister, Gertrude Keeler, a friendly hug as they dine together in the Brown Derby. (Ruby Keeler has since divorced Al Jolson and has been remarried. Cantor and his Ida are still going strong.)
286) Alice Faye and Tony Martin, two of Hollywood's most persistently romantic songbirds, photographed after a late supper as they were leaving the Brown Derby. (Fay and Martin were married after this picture was taken and then divorced. Alice is now married to Phil Harris; Tony is now married to Cyd Charisse.)
311) "Dis is an insult" complains Jimmy "Schnosale" Durante, as he looks with obvious pain at his caricature in the famous Brown Derby. (Durante's nose hasn't changed, nor has Durante except for becoming completely bald and a little bit more lined with age.)
422A) Mr & Mrs. John Barrymore (Elaine Barrie) snapped at an informal moment in the bamboo room of the Brown Derby. (The "great profile" has since passed away and it is believed that Elaine Barrie is still in Hollywood, but not very often heard from.)
442) John Boles buying a cigar from Moselle at the Derby. (Although Boles isn't the screen personality today that he was years ago, he is still the same distinguished looking person.)
453) One of Hollywood's most famous married couples, Dick Powell and Joan Blondell observe one of their monthly wedding anniversaries at the Brown Derby. (Powell and Blondell were divorced, a divorce which stunned all of Hollywood. He is no longer the romantic singing star, but has become a great favorite, playing rough and ready roles. Dick has married June Alyson; Joan has married Michael Todd)
473) Jack Benny pauses in the Brown Derby to talk shop with another famous comedian, George Jessel. (Benny is still king of the radio comedians, while Jessel has become a film producer and has earned the reputation of a great after dinner speaker.)
619) Jackie Coogan and wife (Betty Grable!) enter Brown Derby for dinner. (Divorced. Grable has now married Harry James; Coogan has remarried too and leads a quiet life away from the Hollywood scene.)
921) A bevy of beautiful actresses (sp), Mary Brian, Gail Patrick, Dorothy Lamour and Sally Bilers enjoy a cup of tea together at the Derby. (Of the four only two remain in the spotlight today. - Dorothy Lamour and Gail Patrick.)
982) Whoopee" Lupe Velez is back in town again, and here she is, cigarette holder and all, donning her fox cape as she leaves the Hollywood Brown Derby. (A few years ago Lupe Velez died a suicide from an over dose of sleeping tablets.)
1034) When the late Herbert K. Somborn, picture producer, built the original Brown Derby Cafe he said "If I can serve a good cup of coffee, people will patronize my place even if I build it in the shape of Al Smith's Brown Derby hat." Somborn did just that. And today, Al Smith was a guest in the world-famed cafe for the first time. (Al Smith won't visit the Brown Derby any more.)
1089) Dinner for four -- Fred McMurray (MacMurray, sp), Mrs. McMurray, Mrs. Lloyd Nolan and Lloyd Nolan dined together at the Brown Derby before a recent Hollywood preview. (The four are still the best of friends and there really aren't any changes except for increases in families.)
1112) The Fibber McGee's go out for the evening -- and next to Molly's cooking, the (y) prefer the Brown Derby. Here's the whole family -- Jim Jordan Jr., Mrs. McGee (Nolly), Jim Jordan, Sr. (Fibber) and Katherine. (except for time this caption could remain the same. Jim Jr. is making quite a name for himself being seen with several preeminent Hollywood stars.)
1200) George Burns and Gracie Allen do a little kidding at the Brown Derby. Not a Gracie's new smart fall (??????) (George and Gracie are still going strong on radio).
1206A) The seldom photographed Fred Astaire and Mrs. Astaire snapped while dining out with Randolph Scott at the Brown Derby. (No change except time)

1263A) There is a rumor around Hollywood that romance has come into the lives of May Murray, onetime film star, and Wallace Beery. Here they are leaving the Derby. (Ten years ago.)

1280) Kay Francis is playing hostess to the distinguished novelist Louis Bromfield, new member of the film colony, as they have dinner together in the Brown Derby. (Kay isn't enjoying the film success of ten years ago and after ten years Bromfield isn't considered a new member of the film colony.)
1301) Mr. Clark Gable, the man with the beard, and his wife, Carole Lombard, dine tete-a-tete at the Brown Derby. (Clark remains king among Hollywood's leading men, but unfortunately Carole died about eight years ago in an air crash.) [Lombard died in January 1942, that would place this caption to sometime 1949.]
1310) Clark (Brett Butler) Gable, sporting a mustache again, dines with Mrs. Gable (Carole Lombard) at the Brown Derby. (See 1301)
1383A) Two of Hollywood's most popular screen personalities James Stewart and Olivia DeHavilland are seen constantly together these days. They are seen here at the Brown Derby.
