In RED BOX STEUBEN Glass ICE HUNTER Silver KAYAK Arctic Inuit J. HOUSTON Art
Item History & Price
Consider this Steuben treasure, the very rare signed, new in correct original fitted red leather box Ice Hunter of legendary fame. A heavy fire polished cut and angled crystal floe magnifies and refracts the light into a rainbow pattern. Through the arc of an iceberg, a native Inuit kayaker wends his way (all of solid cast sterling silver.) Below the ice an unwary seal (painstakingly c...opper wheel engraved by hand) swims in the crystal clear water. An early creation of the famed Steuben designer, writer and outdoorsman, the late James Houston. This is a companion piece to the Arctic Fisherman and Arctic Ice Bear and one of a number of famous works by Houston such as Eagle on Globe, Trumpeting Elephant, Trout and Fly. A rare find in gift ready condition. At approx. 6 inches tall by 6 inches wide and approx. 5lbs, this Steuben classic is crystal clear with no chips, no scratches, nicks or signs of use to the glass, no damage to the sterling silver kayaker and no display wear on the bottom. The crystal block is fully signed "steuben" in script. This will be packed in it's *original good condition vintage red leather fitted box with no stains, tears or off odors to the leather or velvet lining, with some impressions in the leather surfaces. You will be thrilled with this stunning work of art.I have set a very fair price for this rare wonderful Steuben sculpture in it's original leather masterwork's box. *As with all Steuben masterwork's, having the correct original red leather fitted box is important to insure safe shipment. Recently other eBay sellers have tried to substitute a red box from a different work or a basic unfitted cardboard Steuben box that is wrong for the design and weight of the piece. Or they take a photo against a red background to imitate the missing box. Incorrect materials often result in a poor shipping outcome. Collectors and those seeking to maintain value in the work look for the complete and proper presentation case.Steuben Glass was founded by Frederick Carder in 1903. Recognized as the world's foremost artisan glass house, Steuben glass was hand made by American craftsmen at the works in Corning NY. Steuben glass was frequently the United States’ gift of State to foreign dignitaries. Steuben marketed no “seconds”. Items that did not meet their exacting production standards were destroyed by being smashed in a bin.
