You arebidding on a large museum quality lidded jar by celebrated mid-Century potter Clyde Burt. DESCRIPTION: This exquisite mid-Century master work isan elegant tapered vessel with a f...lared rounded rim. The latter nicely supports a snug fitting lidwith a sleek hourglass handle. The liddedjar is decorated inside and out with a rich semi-gloss brown glaze. The exterior of the jar is further adornedwith a magnificent quintessential Burt design comprised of alternating rows ofvertical burnt orange and beige lines. Thishighly collectible piece stands 10 ½” tall and measures 6 1/8” in diameter atthe rim- and displays nicely LARGE. Itis in pristine mint condition- no chips, cracks or repairs- and has thepotter’s incised initials in the recessed interior of the unglazed foot ring. (The underside of the lid is also unglazedand features a meticulously executed grooved circular pattern.) This is a no reserve auction. ABOUT CLYDE BURT: Clyde Burt was born in Melrose, Ohio in 1922. He studied at the Fort Wayne Art School, CapeCod School of Art and then did graduate work at The Cranbrook Academy underMaija Grotell. He taught at the DaytonArt Institute and the Fort Wayne School of Art prior to forming a partnershipwith John Nartker (as Burt & Nartker in Clay.) The two artists marketed their workprimarily in Michigan and the Chicago area. Burt exhibited at the Ceramic Nationals from 1954-1958. Exhibitions were held in prestigiousgalleries including the McCormick Exposition Center in Chicago and the MadisionGallery in New York City. His work is inthe permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and theChicago Museum of Art among others. Burtdied in 1981 and the intervening years have seen interest in his work soaramong knowing collectors of mid-Century studio pottery.
