“The American Sportsman was an American television series from 1965 to 1986 on ABC which presented filmed highlights involving the program's hosts and celebrities participating in hunting and/or fishing trips along with outdoor recreational&n...bsp;activities such as whitewater kayaking, hang gliding and free climbing. It was typically presented on Sunday afternoons, frequently following coverage of live sportingevents. From 1965 to 1967, the program was hosted by former South Dakota Republican Governor, American Football Leaguecommissioner, and World War II hero Joe Foss; it was later hosted by Grits Gresham, an outdoorsman from Natchitoches, Louisiana, and long-time sports announcer Curt Gowdy.”
This film contains the last episode of the 1972 season, and it’s two segments are scuba diving off the Hawaiian islands and bird shooting in Northern Maine. In the latter segment, legendary auto racing star Cale Yarborough is one of the hunters.
This is a wonderful ABC network print, with all the original commercials, including those for the Ford Pinto, Mennen’s Skin Bracer, Autolite spark plugs, the RCA XL-100 television, and Cricketeer suits. There is also a promo for the ABC evening news with Howard K. Smith.
The B&W picture is very good (see actual screen shots), the sound is strong, the film runs smoothly, and there is no vinegar smell. The commercials are in faded color. The film is complete with all beginning titles and end credits. Total running time is approximately 27 1/2 minutes.
Thanks for looking at this great piece of television history.
