This is a wonderful, original book, Postal Reform, Boston, 1856....a compilation of several thousand signatures calling for reform of the postal system....I did a quick page flip ofthe several hundred pages and found a few prominent people, Governor Henry Gardner, future Governor Alexander Rice, Elias Howe, members of the Massachusetts Senate, doctors, lawyers, merchants and who knows who else? A one inch thick, 8x12, leather bound volume with several thousand signatures....needs to be... researched. The pages have been bound in, slightly cropped to fit the binding, else in overall good condition.Henry Joseph Gardner (June 14, 1819 – July 21, 1892) was the 23rd Governor of Massachusetts, serving from 1855 to 1858. Gardner, a Know Nothing, was elected governor as part of the sweeping victory of Know Nothing candidates in the Massachusetts elections of 1854.Alexander Hamilton Rice (August 30, 1818 – July 22, 1895) was an American politician and businessman from Massachusetts. He served as Mayor of Boston from 1856 to 1857, a U.S. Congressman during the American Civil War, and as the 30th Governor of Massachusetts from 1876–78. He was part owner and president of Rice-Kendall, one of the nation's largest paper products distributor.Elias Howe was born on July 9, 1819 to Dr. Elias Howe Sr. and Polly (Bemis) Howe in Spencer, Massachusetts. Howe spent his childhood and early adult years in Massachusetts where he apprenticed in a textile factory in Lowell beginning in 1835. After mill closings due to the Panic of 1837, he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to work as a mechanic with carding machinery, apprenticing along with his cousin Nathaniel P. Banks. Beginning in 1838, he apprenticed in the shop of Ari Davis, a master mechanic in Cambridge who specialized in the manufacture and repair of chronometers and other precision instruments.It was in the employ of Davis that Howe seized upon the idea of the sewing machine.He married Elizabeth Jennings Ames, daughter of Simon Ames and Jane B.
