RARE ADRIAN PEARSALL FOR MODELINE VINT MODERNIST LG WALNUT TABLE LAMP ORIG SHADE
Item History & Price
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Adrian Pearsall now being served. 100% authen...tic and 100% original. Estate fresh from southern New Hampshire. It has its original filigree parchment, inverted, bullhorn-shaped, insert lamp shade and its original, intact electrical plug, wire and assembly. The table lamp takes two (2) bulbs of your choice. It remains in full and normal working order, with a three (3) position electrical adjusting polymer turn switch on the side of the brass housing of the interior electrical assembly. It has a stained and lacquered medium dark American walnut finish. The body resembles an upright Atomic age space ship, rocket ship or rather an inverted torpedo. The Space Age, futuristic, forward-looking design, is in keeping with the period which informed the American Modernist designer Adrian Pearsall's (for Craft Associates) furniture design, as well as his lighting design (for Modeline.) Here, we have a quite large, even monumental table lamp at 43" in height, that is no mere lamp but a veritable rocket launch tower or a visually arresting Sputnik satellite orbiting craft, with its extending arms and streamlined form, giving it the appearance of an object zooming through deep space. The surface of the walnut also appears to have its original lacquered finish and only the base suffers two (2) very slight and shallow dings to its facia. The original parchment shade suffers a few bits of paper loss where the affixed brown paper edging is glued and folded over the top of the shade. No attempt has been made to 'in-paint' or fill-in these very small areas with similar paper or color. The shade is largely undisturbed, with no tears, blow-outs, creases or punches to its sidewalls. It does however display a few episodes of scorching, previously caused by the trapped heat generated by former use with heat-generating incandescent electrical light bulbs. The shade is not distorted or deformed though as a result but now has two bands of darker discoloration on the interior of the shade in the proximity of where the interior bulb assemblies are located. This is more readily noticeable when the table lamp is lit and is barely noticeable when not lit. Of course, the original shade could if desired, be replaced with a custom copy, using the original shade as an exact guide to fabricate a replacement shade for the lamp. LED lights are now recommended, since they give off superior light, are more energy efficient and most importantly, don't generate damaging heat, which previously caused the discoloration to the original shade. What is important is that this vintage Adrian Pearsall Modernist table lamp is completely original and as it was originally constituted. Even the two original 40 watt incandescent light bulbs were still inside when the lamp was found. Amazing. A real statement piece for any interior and of monumental proportions, that would even hold up in a high ceiling loft space or 'open-concept' interior space. A truly magnificent find that's ready to take up duty and its newly appointed responsibilities in your home. Terrific. As they say in the trade, this is one killer lamp and one that frankly, takes no prisoners.
CONDITION:Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
