Fine Continentalpewter is not easy to come by for resale – rarities are usually expensive inEurope – and, we each keep some for ourselves! However, we have been acquiring morepewter, partly as a consequence of substantially expanding our acquisitions ofcollections of early Continental metalwork, and will be offering salts, otherholloware, lamps and chargers. We actively purchase from two highly qualifiedFrench and Flemish pewter experts, and acquired more than a dozen pieces from atruly outstanding private French collection of period metalwork and folk art.More recently, we purchased a number of rarities in both France andGermany, including this extremely rare candle mold – it’s only the 2nd I’veseen – and most exceptionally, it showed up less than 25 miles from my house incentral France. As an expatriate American historian of EuropeanDecorative Arts, collector, and guest curator, I can safely state that thereare major advantages to actually living in France for 24 years – not only interms attending major antiques shows & museums, and establishing anextensive network of contacts with curators, collectors and dealers, but alsoas to hands-on experience with Continental antiques. I have handled literallythousands of pieces of period base-metal objects & lighting, and amassed an excellent reference library on early Continentallighting & metalwork. One majorhole in my library is Continental pewter, which I am in the process of filling(I’ve just bought 5 volumes on French pewter), but it will take time. I do havea number of reprints of the extremely useful 18th century series ondifferent trade objects, l’Encyclopedie de Diderot et d’Alembert(1751-1777). Many plates illustrate early lighting & metalwork, includingthe scan of wax-working tools – do note Figures 16 & 27.These individualmolds were also inserted in large wooden floor-standing frames, for making sixto twelve or more candles. This very rare mold has no hallmarks, which is notunusual for French provincial pewter-smiths, or Huguenot pieces. Huguenot pewter chalices were lackingin ecclesiastical motifs (I placed a pair with the Cévenole Valleys Museum several years ago): during the French Revolution, Catholic chalices were also made inthe clandestine form of a whale oil lamp, removable from the center (see photo# 10 – we own three such lamps): none have hallmarks. I’ve handled a largenumber of 18th and early 19th century French pewterpieces with very similar casting lines as those seen on the smaller end of themold (and especially on candlesticks, 1720-1800).The bestreference book on French wrought iron, Raymond Lecoq’s Les Objets dela Vie Domestique, was published in 1979. Unfortunately, it is out of print, difficultto find, & expensive – 300 to 700Euros for a clean copy with its dust jacket - however, it is a must. The coverageof subjects is uneven - not enough space is devoted to the rich diversity ofFrench andirons, firebacks, or secular pricket candlesticks - but in general, fireplace & kitchen pieces and lighting are well-addressed, priorto the mid-19th century.Lecoq wasboth a world-class scholar of metalwork, and serious collector of earlylighting; pages 269 to 312 are solely devoted to the subject. He thoroughlycovers most variations, and documents their earliest known appearances inarchaeological contexts, or in citing French inventories, often as early as1300. On page 275, Lecoq also reproduced the full engraved plate of wax-working tools from l’Encyclopediede Diderot et d’Alembert, in thecontext of a discussion on candles. We do thevast majority of our antiques buying on the Continent, largely in France, buthave substantially expanded our horizons in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Italy, where we now purchase & trade with numerouscollector/dealers. Summers are spent buying on the road inWestern Europe, and we will be offering manymore fine & rare antiques, to be shipped from both France and England.I very actively collect early French & otherContinental lighting, mostly pre-Revolutionary, base metal lamps - I own atleast 400, 75+ lamp trammels, and many other related pieces. As a publishedresearcher, author/journalist, and guest curator, one of my primary goals incollecting is to advance the current limited state of knowledge, as to accuratedate-lines for lighting - I communicate with more than 50 fellow curators, internationally. What you see on eBay is considerably less than 1% of what we own – if International Visibilityever improves, you’ll see a lot more - but we’re not holding our breath. Due to the severity of the problem, I strongly advise buyers tolook over Elly’s eBay UKstore.

Buyers can lower costs on grouped purchases, depending on thesize of the parcel, & insurance coverage - several pieces in one parcelare usually less expensive, as to per-item shipping cost – but do ask first! From the UK - Royal Mailcan only be used for international parcels under 2 kilos;measuring less than 90 centimeters total, andwith a maximum insurance value of £250 (a recent, & exceedingly dumbdecision): FedEx shipping is largely volumetric – the costof sending a 5-kilo parcel is only marginally higher than 1 or 2 kilos – 5 kilos toNorth America can be as little as £50 - versus £28to £32 for 1 kilo – depending on the size of the parcel, & insurance coverage. Buyers canusually lower shipping costs on grouped purchases – but again, please ask first. Payments: PayPal, French or UK checks, or bank drafts, & all bank transfersaccepted. We are obliged to accept PayPal, but prefer bank transfers, or UK orFrench checks - PayPal takes a 4% bite out of all transactions - includingshipping costs. Please feelfree to contact us for grouped rates, and commissioned, or guided buying inFrance - including partial or complete containers, with related services. Forperiod furniture (which we also collect, buy & sell) & other bulkshipping from France to Western Europe & the UK, we can arrange low-costtransport (depending on destination) via bonded & insured shippers. My business partner isan expatriate American historian of Decorative Arts, a published antiqueseditor & writer, guest curator, certified appraiser, & internationallyrespected authority in early glass, lighting, metalwork, sculpture, periodfurniture & other categories.
