Here's an excellent, all-original Edison Red Gem.
Look over the pictures. They tell the story better than I can. A truly beautiful red Gem, and it's factory correct in every respect. Even the rubber horn coupler and crane chain are original. Some scattered minor marks in the metal case's original maroon/red finish, but overall, well --- a gem of a Gem.
No touch-ups, no tweaks, no oversprays, no reproduction or replacement parts. Everything you see on it now is basically the same as when it left the factory more than 110 years ago, including the gold and black decorations. A super nice original example of a super collectible phonograph.
The correct two-piece Fireside horn is of course original, and its original iridescent red surface is in excellent condition both inside and out. These red Fireside horns were painted with fruit dye on unprimed metal surfaces, and after a century of storage in even the most forgiving environments, they're typically shot, but the paint on this example is still bright red and stable throughout.
The Combination K reproducer is original and plays both 2 and 4 minute cylinders.
Oak lid is excellent condition, with no veneer damage or repairs, and the original lid decal is still prominent.
And perhaps the best part about this phonograph is that it plays really well. It's hard to find a 2/4 Gem that can make it all the way through a 4 minute cylinder, but this one does it effortlessly, with power to spare.
I'll include with the phonograph an Edison Gold Moulded cylinder (2-minute) and an Edison Amberol cylinder (4-minute). If you get tired of listening to them, hundreds of others are available on ebay and off. The phonograph plays almost all cylinders -- wax or celluloid.
I've been selling and shipping antique phonographs, antique radios and antique scientific apparatus for more than 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you'll receive a phonograph that arrives safely because it's been carefully packed (by me, not by some well-intentioned but nonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store who wouldn't know a phonograph from a farm tool), and you'll receive a phonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up and operating instructions, so you won't be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your "bargain" arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you'll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.
If you're bidding from overseas, please contact me in advance for a shipping quote. Auction participants with no prior feedback, or with private feedback, should contact me before placing a bid.
That's about it. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
