NO RESERVE: Antique Arts & Crafts Miller Slag Glass Desk Lamp
Item History & Price
&n...bsp; Miller Slag Table Lamp # 971 19" height x 14" wide cast iron with spelter
Arts and Crafts is believed to have started in England with William Morris, Macintosh, Faulkner, Marshal, and others including John Ruskin (read his incredible book: "The Stones of Venice") and the idea of making industrial products a bit more 'humanistic' in that sense. Disgusted with the late industrial age that pumped out 'cheap' copies of stamped floral decorative arts, wallpaper, cheap pottery highly decorated and including 'silverware'. The excess was much to the chagrin of folks like Morse, Vandevelde, and later folks like Stickley etc. The idea was to create manufactured crafted objects with 'honest' treatment of the materials. ( Later developing into Deco and later yet into mid century clean forms.)
Here's a restored relic from the age! It is #971 Miller, glass slag style with iron base and spelter (pot metal) top. It has one original lamp socket with pull chain and I have replaced the other (non-existent when found) with a new copy from Antique Lamps out of WI. The brass finial is also replaced along with a spacer to make certain it remains tight when placed on the threaded post.
The one panel of glass shown in the photos above was broken but fortunately the break was one piece and I have carefully matched it back with a high strength adhesive. From the outside it is not easily found at all!! The spelter joints were loose in a few panels and they has been repaired. (see photos) Note the brass rods that delineate the exterior edges of each panel in one case are slightly bent and not perfect. The brass does show and I felt that a necessary truism.
The lamp portion from mid section to sockets have all new 14stranded copper insulated wire. I have spliced it into the original braided twisted wire with soldered joints and carefully insulated electrician's tape. The exterior plug was as found and simply cut and re-wired for clean fit. As shown with two CA compliant LED bulbs, it throws quite a bit of light with the two bulbs. The new socket is a dual pull, meaning a staged lamp can be used. The original socket is one pull.
The exterior patina was re-created to appear as close to what was found on the main body upright (shaft). This body is barely touched with new patination. The upright and cross bars of brass are left as found, very nicely patinaed. I have used Windsor Newton oil as the color for the re-patination. It has been lightly waxed with an automotive wax and lightly buffed to a delightful simple finish. I have left the bottom surface as found simply because some might like to find this pattern of calendared paper or vinyl to keep it original.
The lamp weighs in around 20# [9kilo] and will be most carefully packed. It will arrive in two separate boxes. Insured Shipping will be per location. Returns are accepted as long as the lamp is returned within 14days in perfect condition as shipped. Buyer will pay return shipping. I have carefully and thoughtfully described this spectacular Miller and know that you will find it a most precious place in your home.
