Original Description:
I've been collecting for over 55 years and it is now time to let most of my personal collection go.   This group was acquired many years ago with a photo album, unit history book and yard long photo of the 2nd Battalion 28th Marines.  The named uniform group that came with the albums/photos is being listed separately.  These are the Marines that assaulted Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima and raised the American flag over the island.&nbs...p; I am listing these items as collectibles.  As such, the only size information given in the description are those marked on the items.  The photos really tell the whole story so please review them carefully.  Shipping costs shown are for domestic delivery only.  Overseas shipping will be quite a bit more.  I use the eBay Global Shipping Program and overseas shipping costs will be included with the invoice.Offered here is probably one of my best finds as far as really touching history.  As an ex-Marine, the connection with the Iwo Jima assault and the flag raising is too remarkable for words. Seeing never before seen photos of the men who fought and died taking Mt. Suribachi 9and raised the American flag over the island) has been inspiring.  This photo album, unit history and yard long unit photo of the 2nd Battalion 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division and the uniform I am listing separately uniform belonged to PFC Richard Selva.  PFC Selva served with Co. E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division.  PFC Selva was wounded on Iwo Jima and is listed on page 214 and 268 of "Spearhead" the unit history of the 5th Marine Division.  The group includes 28th Marines unit photo, 5th Marine Division "Spearhead" unit history and Selva's photo album documenting the action and some of the fellow Marines who fought together on Iwo.The items are as follows:(1)  Framed Unit Photo:  This is a remarkable and historic original "yard long" unit photo of the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment 5th Marine Division.  It was taken in July 1944 at Camp Pendleton, California before the unit headed out to Hawaii in preparation for the assault on Iwo Jima.  The photo came folded in half in the photo album and I have mounted in the yard long frame that my unit photo was in.  The photo measures 8 inches X 22w 1/2 inches.  The frame measures 11 inches X 26 inches. I will not send the photo outside the frame.  Information and documentation compiled on the identification of some of the Marines in the photo will come with the photo.  Many were fellow Marines who had photos in Selva's photo album but also most of the Mt. Suribachi flag raisers including Franklin Sousley, Michael Strank, Harlen Block, Rene Gagnon and Ira Hayes.  Unfortunately Hayes is standing exactly where the photo was creased but you can tell by looking at both sides of the face that he is a Native American and also has jump wings on his coat.  Many Para Marines went to the 5th Division after the Marine Parachute units were disbanded.  There are numerous Marines wearing jump wings in the photo.  There is some tape residue on the photo and the corners have come off from being tacked up no doubt.   (2) "Spearhead" 5th Marine Division Unit History Book:  "Spearhead" is the unit history of the 5th Marine Division.  The book belonged to PFC Selva.  He is listed on page 214(WIA) and on page 268.  The book is an excellent chronicle of the Iwo Jima action and the 28th Marines are notably mentioned throughout.  The book is in good condition.  The cover is faded and has some edge wear.  The pages are all in good shape, no rips or tears.  Some of the pages have a little staining from age.  The book is a first edition published by "Infantry Journal Press" in 1950.(3) Photo Album:  Selva's photo album contains a huge amount of photos.  There are some family photos and some of them had been removed earlier.  I think he also removed a couple of "compromising" photos taken in Hawaii.  There are quite a few photos in Hawaii. Almost all of the remaining photos are of his fellow Marines and the action on Iwo Jima.  Selva labeled his photos and there are several of the Suribachi flag raisers - Franklin Sousley and Harlen Block.  All of the named photos I have researched out and founds their muster and service information.  There are a couple of labeled Japanese photos that Selva had taken off Japanese dead on Iwo.  He labeled them that way.  There is also his ID card from the Navy hospital he was treated in 1945.   eBay limits each listing to 12 photos and I could have filled up that amount with just the album alone.  I have other photos so feel free to ask if you need more. This is a really nice historical group attributed to a USMC Iwo Jima combat vet.  As aforementioned, his unit assaulted Mt. Suribachi and some of the photos in his photo album are of the flag raisers (Franklin Sousley and Harlen Block).  The original July 1944 "yard long" 2nd Bn 28th Marines photo shows almost all of the flag raisers and I have chart of their position in the photo. This is an odd sized group so shipping costs reflect that.As a former Marine (67-71), WW2 USMC uniforms and articles are the core of my personal collection.  I have several dozen 1st Division Aussie made jackets and other gear and as I've stated before, they are all uniquely different and individual.  I am also listing a lot of unit marked 782 gear and vet bring back Japanese items.I only use PayPal for payment unless other arrangements are made before you bid.  International bidders need to understand that my shipping quote is for domestic PRIORITY delivery only.  International shipping will be quite a bit more and I ship overseas using eBay's Global Shipping Program.
