Here's a 1903 Edison Home A cylinder phonograph with a beautiful "Banner" style fumed oak cabinet,... an uncommon E.L. Aiken Type D repeating attachment, an early 18" all-brass hanging horn, and a nickeled and polished 15" table crane. The Type D repeater is functioning correctly and can be seen working in the video posted below.
Though the phonograph itself is immaculate, the star of the show is obviously the repeater, a ruggedly constructed but fairly elaborate contraption that literally lifts the stylus up from the surface of the record when the selection is over and transports the carriage back to the starting groove, at which point the carriage is lowered and the selection resumes playing from the beginning.
The repeater consistently works as designed and can be easily tweaked with the adjustable start-rod (the S-shaped bar seen beneath the large, candy-cane-like carriage transport screw) that determines where the carriage will be lowered once it's been returned to the start of the record. To fully appreciate the brilliance of the attachment, you should check out the patent (US 820165 A) in Google's patent database.
As you can see in the photographs, the condition of the phonograph -- including the repeater -- is excellent to near mint throughout. Original gold pinstriping is still prominent on both the upper and lower casting. Original black paint is still clean and glossy, with minimal wear evident. Nickel-plated parts still gleam.
The cabinet finish is original, and it's pristine. The desirable banner-style cabinet decal is original, and it's nearly perfect, with vibrant colors and no scarring or deterioration anywhere. Original green tint is still prominent inside the cabinet, on the underside of the base, and beneath the lid. Cabinet hardware is in good condition, with surface oxidation in areas, but no damage or corrosion. The original crank is in good condition, with no chips in the iron or damage to the wood handle, just enamel wear from normal use and handling.
The motor and gearing under the deck are clean, the governor is working properly, and the machine runs quietly. The original 18" all-brass hanging horn is stunning, with no dings, no dents, and a mirror-like polished surface. The table crane has been professionally re-nickeled and is as beautiful as the horn.
I'llinclude with the phonograph an excellent Edison Gold Moulded cylinder record in its original cardboard canister. If you get tired of listening to it, dozens of other Gold Moulded cylinders are available on ebay each week, and the machine plays all 2-minute cylinders, not just those manufactured by Edison.
I've been selling and shipping antiquephonographs, antique radios and antique scientific apparatus for morethan 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you'llreceive a phonograph that arrives safely because it's been carefullypacked (by me, not by some well-intentioned butnonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store whowouldn't know a phonograph from a farm tool), and you'll receive aphonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up andoperating instructions, so you won't be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lowerprice from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your "bargain" arrivesbroken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able toput it back together, you'll realize that you really do get exactlywhat you pay for.
If you're bidding from overseas, please contact me in advance for a shipping quote. The phonograph is large and heavy, and it cannot be shipped to some countries. Therefore, I will need to confirm my ability to ship it to you before you place a bid. Auction participants with no prior feedback should contact me before placing a bid.
