A Brief History of The Rolex Submariner ref. 1680
The Rolex 1680 Submariner was the first reference in the brand’s line of professional divers to offer a date display on the dial. Previously, it was believed that a date mechanism was not necessary as the Submariner was meant to be used primarily underwater. However, as popularity for the line soared among collectors of all professions, Rolex developed a variation with a date display in the late 1960s via ref. 1680.Also known as the “Red Submariner”, the ref. 1680 is characterized by a bold red Submariner logo just below the central hands. This feature was replaced with a white logo in the early 1970s and is very coveted among avid vintage Submariner collectors. If you come across a red logo Sub, such as the reference that is presented here today, we recommend jumping on the opportunity to add it to your luxury watch collection. It’s also worth noting that, during the ref. 1680’s production, seven dial variations were produced and are signified as Mark I – Mark VII. This reference presents the time on a handsome feet-first dial with open 6’s in the depth rating and a long and slim Rolex coronet. The luminous material inside the hour markers and Mercedes hands has aged to a light creamy color. The case and bracelet are in great condition with what appears to be a light polish and some slight stretch. Finally, the bezel insert has faded to a desirable dark blue, giving this timepiece immense character and appeal. This watch has recently been serviced.
