GERMAN TEXT PRINTED IN STUTTGART.Max WilhelmMeyer (born February 15, 1853 in Braunschweig , † December 17, 1...910 in Untermais near Meran ) was a German astronomer , naturalist and writer .Max Wilhelm Meyer was the son of the glass master Georg Meyer (*around 1810 , † around 1870 in Braunschweig). He spent severalyears of his youth in the family of his brother Heinrich Carl Georg Meyer, arailway master in Mainholzen near Braunschweig. He was known for hiscollection of around 2, 000 petrefacts and probably inspired the scientific interest of hisnephew. [1] Meyerleft 1, 867 school without qualifications. He then taught as abookseller. In 1871 he had a job at the observatory in Göttingen and moved to Leipzig because of his study of astronomy .In 1875 Meyer received his doctorate in Zurich from the University for double stars . Now he toured Naples , Pompeii and Capri . From 1877 to 1882 he worked as an assistant atthe Geneva Observatory. Meyerplanned his future as a writer. At this time his first feature appeared in the Frankfurter Zeitung . Another station was Vienna in 1883 (there he calculated the dataof several thousand solar eclipses ). Meyer married in Vienna in May 1884, movedto Berlin in 1885, wherehis son Ernst was born in June 1886. Meyer wrote over five months a monthfive feature articles for the newspaper Berliner Tageblatt . Together with the inventor Werner von Siemens and the astronomer Wilhelm Foerster he founded in 1888 the astronomicalsociety Urania , whose directorhe was until 1897. In the Urania building in Berlin-Moabit Meyer realizedhis idea of a "scientific theater", for which he resorted totheater techniques, which he already tested in the Vienna horticulturalexhibition and developed with the theater technician Carl Lautenschläger . In 1890 he was elected a memberof the Leopoldina . Healso directed heaven and earth, the "Illustrated NaturalScience Journal" of Urania. [2] Due to a dispute with Wilhelm Foerster he lost his job atthe Urania and moved to Capri and Zurich.Meyer wrote throughout his life poems , short stories and plays . He owned a very extensive natural history collection.Text excerpt of a travel report [ edit | Edit ]Max Wilhelm Meyer also worked as a travel journalist, as in 1906for the magazine Kosmos . [3] He describes in it as Dr. M.Wilh. Meyer (Urania-Meyer) experiences his (presumably primarilyfor astronomical interest undertaken) trip to Egypt and also provides thephotos to his text. The five-page article takes the then typical colonialist basic perspective, which considers theArabs as friendly, fun-loving, but backward people:"The Arabs, or whatever else dwells on human races, areconstantly crying out terribly, but they are not arguing."He writes about a little boy who cleans his shoes in Cairo:"Here are nimble little guys from six to eight years, andin all colors (except white), in which today the boots vary. Around hislittle box, which he carries on his back, our little fellow, depending on hiswealth, has attached up to a dozen different bottles for the various leathercolors. [...] What does a scamp do with the money? [...] no one canstarve here at all. They could lie down somewhere under a beautiful palmtree all day and always crawl their shadow as their only occupation. A fewdates almost fall into their mouths themselves. [...] He saves and worksto acquire the highest enjoyment of life, a woman, or even several, so that hecan found his cozy home, his harem.
