This ring belonged to a consignor's great grandmother who lived in Russia during the Revolution and the Soviet Union after it was established in 1922. She believes the ring dates to the 1930s and was given to her by someone other than her great grandfather-- she isn't sure who, but the ring was not kept with other jewelry that she had owned and no one seemed to know any history. Sounds like a secret romance to me! At any rate its an exceptionally gorgeous diamond ring and would make a ...one of a kind engagement piece.
The center stone is about 4.5x5mm and is estimated to weigh about .47 carats. Its a deep stone so it faces up more like a .40 carat, old mine cut and an irregular oval/cushion shape. It is surely a "native cut" done at the mine to preserve weight, and has a chunky, antique appearance with a large open culet. I had asked my jeweler to grade this but he said that such a primitive cut is really not suitable for modern grading. He calls it an SI-2 in clarity. There are 8 chunky rose cut stones surrounding the center, ranging from about 2.5 to 3mm in diameter. all hand cut and irregular shaped with flat backs. This ring is estimated to have about .60-.67 carats total.
The face of the ring measures 10.5x9mm and has a crown-like appearance in profile. The rose cuts are held in scalloped settings with ornate prongs. The center stone stands 6mm off the hand at the highest point. The band is 3mm wide the whole way around and is crafted of 14K rose gold with Soviet marks on the exterior back of the band.
Condition is excellent for its age. All stones are secure. This is a small size at a 4.75 and can be resized by your jeweler. It weighs 2.6 grams.
