More than 70 years ago, sculptor L.L. Rittgers showed the world that no matter how strong your argument, you cannot... change an umpire’s mind. While many still fail to comprehend this concept, it rings true on this 1941 trio of statues. Crafted In Chicago from molded plaster over wire frames, the figurines include players from opposing teams and an umpire. Designed with caricature-like features that include exaggerated facial scowls as they lean in toward the arbiter, the players are respectively clad in painted “A” and “N” uniforms (presumably American and National League representatives). The umpire, meanwhile, isn’t hearing any of it, standing with hands folded behind his back with wearing a calm, stoic glance. These present beautifully, incredible preservation of the original paint applications. While various reproductions and versions have surfaced throughout the years from other countries, these are the "REAL DEAL" as evidenced by the “1941” and “Lafayette Rittgers” carvings on the right side of each shoe.
