If how a piece of antique technology looks is as important to you as how it works, make sure to check out all of my auctions this week. I'm listing more than a half dozen different items that have one thing in common: they're as wonderful to behold as they are to operate. And don't forget, you can add me to your favorite seller list and Ebay will automatically send you updates when I put similar new auctions online.
Here's a really nice early Grebe ...CR-3 regenerative tuner and its matching RORD detector and 2-stage amplifier. These uncommon Grebe components are seldom found in such nice condition, and seldom found in such good working order.
Condition is excellent. Both pieces have low serial numbers (RORD is 119; CR-3 is 231) and both pieces are wholly original, including the audio transformers in the RORD and the paper Armstrong license on the underside of the CR-3's lid. As noted, both pieces are still working (tested this weekend). Neither component has significant wear. Both chassis are clean, both cabinets retain their factory finish, and it's still smooth, with minimal wear. The panels are likewise excellent, with crisp, legible factory engraving. Original undamaged dials and knobs. Original Grebe binding post nuts on both the CR-3 and the RORD. No missing binding post nuts. Nuts on the CR-3 are bakelite with brass interiors; nuts on the RORD are all brass. All of the blackened panel screws are original and correct.
Both original Grebe transformers are good.
Tunes well; I was able to pick up quite a few stations, even during the day. If you'd like to operate it, you'll need a good regulated power supply (I'd recommend an ARBE III), a horn loudspeaker from the 1920's, a strong indoor ground connection and a longwire outdoor antenna (ham radio type -- about 120 feet long and 20 feet off of the ground). You'll also need to have had some experience tuning an early 1920's regenerative battery radio. Unlike AC radios, or even later TRF battery radios, early regenerative sets can be temperamental and difficult to use, and if you've never tried to power one up before, this is not the place to start.
Includes three good tipped tubes and a nice, working Western Electric headset.
That's about it. I will package everything carefully and properly, and I can assure you that it will show up at your doorstep in the same fine condition in which it leaves mine. I have been shipping antique phonographs and radios for years, and if you check my feedback, you'll see that I know how to do it correctly. Buyer prepays and includes shipping. Paypal okay.
