Some people go to the beach to relax. Some people go to the mountains. Me, I walk around a brightly lighted room in the back of my house taking photographs of stuff I think you'll like. So here you go. One of six more reasons you should check out my new auctions every Sunday night instead of dozing off after Big Brother. And don't forget to look at the other five reasons. Here's a super clean Columbia Q phonograph with a 10" nickel horn, an original c. 1900 Columbia brochure in which the phonograph is featured, and an early Q reproducer in its original box.
As you can see in the photographs, condition is just about mint. Q reproducer has a good sapphire and undamaged mica. Plays both wax and celluloid cylinders, one of which I'll include with it. Original cabinet decal is in excellent condition, with hardly any signs of wear. Nearly perfect lid, with a superb original finish. Both original rod guides are clean and intact, and the lid screws securely to the base.
Mechanism is almost spotless. Motor and gearing are in excellent working order, and the governor keeps the mandrel spinning at a steady speed.
The 10" nickel horn is a replica from Ron Sitko. It's almost indistinguishable from an original horn, except that unlike most original nickel horns, it doesn't look like it was just pulled up from the bottom of Lake Erie. The flat winding key is original, with no rust and minimal plating wear.
Overall, an exceptionally nice Q that needs nothing to be enjoyed as soon as it arrives.
I've been selling and shipping antique phonographs, antique radios and antique scientific apparatus for more than 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you'll receive a phonograph that arrives safely because it's been carefully packed (by me, not by some well-intentioned but nonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store who wouldn't know a phonograph from a farm tool), and you'll receive a phonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up and operating instructions, so you won't be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your "bargain" arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you'll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for. That's about it. Auction participants with no prior feedback record, or with hidden feedback, should contact me before bidding.
Bidders Outside The USA Please Note: There's a glitch in ebay's USA site software that's preventing my Ebay Store from being exported to several non-USA ebay sites. Here's the workaround. If you click on my feedback score, you'll be taken to my feedback page. There, on the right side of the page, you'll see a link that allows you to "view items for sale." If you click that link, you'll see everything that I currently have listed. Alternatively, if you click my seller name, "firebottles, " you'll be taken to my seller page, where you can also view everything that I currently have listed. I apologize for the glitch. I'm trying to get it resolved with ebay.
