ULTRA-RARE VINTAGE Lionel OO Gauge 1938 Presentation Case w/ Complete Hudson 5342 Set
In1938 Lionel introduced their first OO gauge trains featuring the miniatureversion of the O scale 5344 Lionel Hudson. The OO Hudson number 5342 was ascale replica of the O gauge locomotive right down to a miniature draw bar pinand chain that connected the locomotive to the tender. This set came with ahopper car, tank car, boxcar and caboose as shown in the 1938 Lionel catalog.(See photo #2, Ca...talog/article NOT included)
In an effort to introduce this new product line to Lionel retailers Lionelproduced a handy presentation carrying case that their salesmen would travelwith and show to their dealers. The inside of the case had a red felt liningwith cutouts for each of the trains and track. The inside lid had goldlettering introducing the new OO line. The case contained the above-mentionedlocomotive and cars and also had 12 sections of curved track and 8 pieces ofstraight. This style of three rail track was only produced during 1938. Lionelchanged the design of the track for the 1939 production year and also offeredtwo rail tracks to complement their new two rail OO Trains introduced in 1939.The 1938 presentation set included the Hudson locomotive 001E number 5342 withthe matching whistling tender. The boxcar is number 0014, the tank car 0015, the hopper car number 0016 and the caboose 0017. All of these item numbers were only produced in 1938. With the outbreak of WWll Lionel suspended production of model trains to focus on the production ofequipment for the war effort. After the war ended Lionel resumed production ofmodel trains and the OO line was discontinued.
This 1938 presentation set is in remarkable condition considering it is 81years of age. Please refer to the photos which clearly show the excellentcondition of the set and presentation case. The case has some wear on thecorners and handle and the original Lionel graphics on the inside of the lidare crisp. All being considered the case is solid. The Locomotive runs and isnear perfect. There are no missing or broken parts although, there is a slightbend in the cab shield on the fireman's side. The cars have some normal wearbut are complete with no missing parts. The track is in excellent condition, the terminal section has a chip out of one corner. This does not affect theconnection of the track or the operation. Again, please see the photos. All in all, this set is in C7+ condition.
It is not known how many of these 1938 presentation sets were produced forLionel salesman. I have been told by high level Lionel collectors that thesepresentation sets are extremely rare. I only know of three presentation sets(including this one) the other two sold at auction for five figures each.
