1950 ' S Vintage BUFFET CRAMPON BASS CLARINET To Low Eb - Affordable Quality
Item History & Price
Vintage BUFFET CRAMPON Bass Clarinet in Bb - circa the 1950'sSerial Number: 19478
Fine-grained Grenadilla body has no cracks; nickel silver keywork is in very good condition with minimal wear. Keywork includes a LH pinky alternate Ab/Eb key. Large RH thumb hook has strap hook; there are also 2 other strap hooks for playing while standing. Tenon corks in good condition and fit snugly. Tenons are in good condition with minimal wear.
In ...the lower joint there are several tiny screw holes that have been patched, from the original brace for the extension peg. I had my technician solder a brace for the peg onto the bell (where it should be - no stress on the wood.) Other than that, the tight-grained Grenadilla is in remarkable condition for the age of the instrument (please see pics).
Neck is in good condition with only the tiniest of dings. I had my technician change the angle of the neck at the mouthpiece receiver to make it more vertical, like a clarinet (see closeup pics).
Bell has numerous dings and small dents and scratches (it happens with bass clarinets!), but nothing that will affect performance of the instrument. Extension peg with rubber tipped foot is included in a pocket in the case.
This instrument has been lovingly cared for and played sparingly by a professional for the last 20 years in recording studios, jazz venues and musical theatre pits. It plays in tune and has the rich sound you'd expect from a quality Buffet Crampon bass clarinet. There is a lot of life left in the pads, though you may find it needs one or two replaced. As with all woodwinds, it will need some adjustments to play its best. It is offered at a low $1000 auction price to start. (Most used Buffet bass clarinets to low Eb start around $5000.)
Case is made for a low C Buffet Crampon bass clarinet; the pocket for the lower joint has been modified to fit the shorter part (but not permanently). Case interior is in good condition; exterior is solid and covered with a zippered case cover with a large zippered pocket that will easily hold music or ?.
This is a quality older instrument that has served me well; I am moving on to a new low C instrument. This would be a fine alternative to a student or doubler wanting to play a Buffet instead of a Chinese instrument of doubtful quality.
