We are offering for sale a fabulous George V period silver half pint mug with a glass base.
The glass base was originally introduced as a prevention against devious conscription methods to the Royal Navy by way of a shilling being surreptitiously dropped in to an unsuspecting man's ale tankard. By taking the King's Shilling, one agreed to serve as a soldier or sailor in the British Army or Royal Navy and this practice was closely related to impressment by press gangs. The glass base... allowed men to check for the presence of such a coin!
A 1914 silver shilling is included with this offering (see final photos). Aptly made by Page, Keen & Page, who were retailers in the important naval city of Plymouth, this beer tankard has been made from a good thickness of silver and has a nice, hefty weight in the hand. It is free from engravings and is in fine condition throughout.
