Summer's here, and if you don't believe me, just step outside for a few minutes and see what's sticking to your skin when you step back in. Not pretty, I know, but before you rip off your sweat-soaked clothes and jump into the shower for the third time today, take a few minutes to look at all the amazing stuff I've got listed on ebay this week: Musical antiques. Technical antiques. Mechanical antiques. If it moves, makes noise, or appears to be miraculous, you'll probably fi...nd it in the line-up. Just click "see other items" after you read about this one. And don't forget, you can click this link to quickly add and then save me to your favorite seller list and Ebay will automatically send you updates when I put similar new auctions online.
Here's an excellent 1906 Edison Home B cylinder phonograph with a rare E.L. Aiken repeater and an original 24" all-brass hanging horn. The repeater is functioning flawlessly and can be seen working in the video posted below.
Though the phonograph merits praise in its own right, the star of the show is obviously the repeater, a ruggedly constructed but nonetheless elegant contraption that literally lifts the entire carriage when the selection is over and transports it back to the starting groove, at which point the carriage is lowered and the selection resumes playing from the beginning. To fully appreciate its brilliance, you should check out the original patent document (US 820165 A) in Google's patent database.
The phonograph's motor is very robust, the repeater is set up properly, and when fully wound, the machine can repeat a song up to 4 times before running out of steam. That's a remarkable feat for a repeating Home Phonograph (as you know if you've ever owned one). Most repeating Homes are too anemic to be able to lift and return the carriage even once. The cabinet finish is original, and it's in good shape, with a nice original cabinet decal and only scattered minor marks on the lid and sides. The motor and gearing under the deck are clean. The 24" all-brass hanging horn is in great shape, as you can see, and it's been professionally polished to a brilliant luster.
I'llinclude with the phonograph an excellent Edison Gold Moulded cylinder record in its original cardboard canister. If you get tired of listening to it, dozens of other Gold Moulded cylinders are available on ebay each week, and the machine plays all 2-minute cylinders, not just those manufactured by Edison.
I've been selling and shipping antiquephonographs, antique radios and antique scientific apparatus for morethan 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you'llreceive a phonograph that arrives safely because it's been carefullypacked (by me, not by some well-intentioned butnonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store whowouldn't know a phonograph from a farm tool), and you'll receive aphonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up andoperating instructions, so you won't be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lowerprice from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your "bargain" arrivesbroken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able toput it back together, you'll realize that you really do get exactlywhat you pay for.
If you're bidding from overseas, please contact me in advance for a shipping quote. The phonograph is large and heavy, and it cannot be shipped to some countries. Therefore, I will need to confirm my ability to ship it to you before you place a bid. Auction participants with no prior feedback should contact me before placing a bid.
That's about it. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
