Description:
The RCA CDP18S020 Evaluation/Design Kit was the engineering evaluation kit, which RCA offered to engineers considering design with the CDP1802 microprocessor. It is an expanded version of the Micro-Board, and the hobbyist COSMAC Elf series systems. This system provided a "full blown" computer, with enough memory (ROM and RAM, ) Input/Output (I/O) and expansion space (both on-board, as well as three expansion connectors for adding additional memory and peripherals.)
<...br>This board is in very good condition, and the MPM-203 manual below provides all the information you would need to check it out (check out procedure: pg 24-29) and, if necessary, restore it to operational condition. You can see from the pictures that all of the necessary chips are present (and all are from RCA.) The only thing not on the board is the optional CDP1831 Option ROM, and 3/4 k of RAM chips, which were never installed originally. The CDP1831 512-byte CMOS ROM is where you could add custom applications for your system; it was not originally supplied with the kit.

In addition to that, the prototyping area is clean with only a single 16-pin DIP IC socket, and two wires (red for +5V and black for ground) to provide power for the prototyping area.

Web Information:The manual for this kit can be found at: http://www.bitsavers.org/components/rca/cosmac/MPM-203_CDP1802_Evaluation_Kit_Manual_Sep76.pdf.

The user manual for the CDP1802 processor itself can be found here: http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/rca/1802/MPM-201A_CDP1802_User_Manual_1976.pdf.

There is a good description of Tiny BASIC for this computer listed in the MPM-203 manual, starting on page 338 of the PDF (the table of contents lists the page numbers in the PDF, rather than the page numbers shown on the bottom of each page - it makes it easier to find what you want.) The language itself is actually listed in Appendix A of the MPM-203, and this manual has a lot of information about the language, including sample programs.

This Tiny BASIC looks a lot like Tom Pittman's Tiny BASIC for the 1802 but I cannot find any reference to Tom in the manual. The manual for Tom's Tiny BASIC may be found here: http://www.ittybittycomputers.com/IttyBitty/TinyBasic/TBuserMan.txt" and may be of some assistace. Tom's Tiny BASIC page (http://www.ittybittycomputers.com/IttyBitty/TinyBasic/ has a lot more information about Tiny BASIC (including a couple of games, ) in general.

There is a very active group working on, and with, the 1802 family of computers. You can find this group at: https://groups.io/g/cosmacelf/topics. There is also a great web site dedicated to the Elf/1802 family (http://cosmacelf.com/.) There are tons of files on the 1802 andElf to be found there.

The Elf II was a similar computer, produced by Netronics. Tom Pittman wrote a book ("Introduction to Programming in Tiny Basic" on his web site: http://www.ittybittycomputers.com/IttyBitty/TinyBasic/ProgTB/ProgTB0.htm) for that Netronics Elf. If you would like a good introduction to computer programming, straight out of the 1970s, you should be able to convert Tom's book to this Engineerig Kit. This will give you quite a bit of material to play (err, experiment) with.

This particular computer was a part of a computer museum. I received the computer when the museum folded, and have had it for a few years (I could not let it go when I donated most of the other museum pieces to another museum.) Unfortunately, after five years of un- and under-employment, I need to let go of some of my prizes.

Due to the age of this computer, and the fact that I don't have a proper power supply for it, this is being sold as-is, and has not been tested.

If you do not win this auction, but would like to play with an 1802 computer, take a look at the EMMA02 Elf Emulator: https://www.emma02.hobby-site.com/download.html

Shipping: This item will be shipped U.S. Postal Service priority mail, and there will be a flat shipping, and handling, charge of $12.00.
