CIRCA: 1890's
Pretty, circa late 1800's French Fashion doll. Maker unknown, but suspect Jumeau or most likely Galtier. Fixed, unusual, violet paperweight eyes, closed mouth, swivel head. Body is leather and she has sewn on stockings, no shoes. Clothing appear vintage and predominantly hand stitched, but do not believe them to be original to the doll. She stands 12" tall. I have not attempted to remove her clothing, they are a tight fit, and I cannot determine how to remove them. I know this may sound odd, but they seem to be sewn not directly on to her body, but in a way that makes them very tight on her body, and I cannot remove them. I do guarantee her body to be in good condition and original to her. Please see the pictures of her hands. She has a lovely facial expression and nicely painted features with a pale skin color. She carries a functional, marked "Silver" purse that opens. I suspect it is for holding small pictures. I am not sure if she has any markings. I can only pull the collar area of her blouse so far, but not far enough to reveal any markings. She does have a flake at the bottom edge of her neck, left side. To put it into perspective, this flake is about the length of a grain of rice and slightly wider. The picture taken in macro mode and close up makes this miniscule flake appear at least double or more in size. I have had several requests to remove the cork pate and shine a light into this little darlings head. I removed the wig that was held on with old nails, but before attempting to remove the cork, I called my friend who has been a doll collector for many years, and attends and sets up at shows, to ask her about this U shaped metal object protruding from the cork. Today I learned something, and assuredly avoided catastrophe. She explained to me that these swivel head Fashion dolls usually had a hook that secured the cork/head to a spring that was attached in the neck region, which allows the head to swivel and secures the head to the shoulder plate. Attempting to remove this is tricky and would surely result in the cork being crumbled and damaged beyond use, and quite possibly chipping the rim, or even worse damage to the the head. I have carefully inspected the head using a very bright LED light and magnification, and there are no hairlines or repair to her head. In fact, we believe the cork pate has never been removed, and the wig is original to the girl. I have a picture of the U shaped metal object that attaches the cork/head to the shoulder should anyone like to see it. SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED.
