Description
The camera is for demonstration only,   not included in this sale.
This is a rare lens, this is also a controversial lens. This copy of mine will help to answer some long disputed questions concerning the history of this lens. Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5 is one of the best fast prime on Leica mount at that time and was favored by legendary photographer Henry Cartier Bresson. The number of the copies of the lens are very limited. For some extremely rare batches of lens marked 5, 8cm f/1.5 or 6cm f/1.5, they are never officially listed in the Zeiss product categories. According to the SN, there are only around 500 units of 5.8cm f/1.5 Sonnar ever made. There are many versions of stories how theses lenses were made. I got this lens from a Veteran who was the sole owner of this lens. This is what he told me:
"I was stationed at Wheeler’s Air Force Base Tripoli Libya I bought the lens with a Leica camera at the PX in probably 1950 I was there between 1950 and 1952."
His comments have provided a lot of useful information. First, those rumors saying that these batches of Sonnar lens were fake replica made in 1980s are totally nonsense! This lens was bought exactly in 1950! Second, as many of these lenses, the source is again the military and it was bought right after war. It generally supported one theory that these lenses are made by previous Zeiss workers with Zeiss optics and East Europe metals in the fabrication in Ukraine. My experience in collecting the camera gears also tell me that this may be the case. We can see the coating of the front element shows purple tone which is exact the same as the Sonnar 50/1.5 lens made in West Germany. But, the lens is made of alloy instead of brass which is generally used on Sonnar 50/1.5 on different mounts, so there can be only two possibilities: the lens is made in East Europe after war or was made in West Germany during the war owing to the lack of brass. Personally I am more confident of the first theory because during the war almost all the aluminum was used to make aircraft, it was kind of luxurious to make a lens in alloy. As far as I know there is still no definite answer to the question of the origin of these lenses, but at least we can say they are 100% from Zeiss after I have this lens with the story behind it.
Now let's talk about the condition of it: there are many micro scratches on the front element and I can see the coating of the first element beneath the shutter blade are becoming deteriorated, but if you look through the lens, you will not see it, it can only be seen under certain low angles so I think this may not affect the image quality. There are no other optical problems. Also we can see some "Zeiss bubble" in the lens which is the common case for Zeiss lenses. The focus and aperture function of the lens work smoothly and perfect, nothing should be mentioned. Again we can see the beautiful purple coating of the lens while the only other lens of this model selling on Ebay is totally coating-less. I believe it was previously polished to make the glasses "perfect". I will never do that and make the lens lose its identity of "Zeiss made", although it will not be optically perfect. Also I see there is no "Red T" on that copy. I will keep the lens as I received it and leave it to the buyers to decide whether it should be refreshed. Now, just join the bid!
