Antique F E Becker London and W & J George Ltd Scientific Measurement Dip Needle
Circa 1910
F E Becker Traded at 33-37, Hatton Wall, Hatton Garden (1900-10) & Nivoc House, 17-29 Hatton Wall (1930s), all London England.Founded in 1872 then taken over by W.J. George Ltd in 1897, but continued to trade under original name until 1950s when renamed W. & J. George & Becker Ltd.
Oak and glazed cased dipping needle.
The Dip Needle i...s a compass pivoted to move in the plane containing the magnetic field vector of the earth. It will then show the angle which the magnetic field makes with the vertical. The needle must be accurately balanced so that only magnetic torques are exerted on it. Some texts suggest that the dip angle be measured twice, with the poles of the needle reversed by remagetization between trials, and the results averaged. Some instruments allow the needle and circle to be rotated to allow use as a compass.
Bovine makers name plaque to the top and spirit level (with bubble) for levelling the adjustable height feet.

Mint - No damage, like new. Excellent - No damage. Possibly some very light fading or light crazing. Very good - No damage. Some fading, heavy crazing, foxing, etc. Good - There may be some damage. However this will be either very small, difficult to see, hidden from sight or repaired.Poor - Damaged. There will be something wrong with the item which may significantly effect the item use. Very poor - Item is more or less unusable. Scrap.
