This rare work has been neatly rebacked, with the contemporary leather boards retained. It measures approx. 21cm x 16.9cm x 1.7cm. As can be seen from the images, the boards are surface worn and scuffed, and the corners are bumped and a little chipped, with small loss. Else good and firm. Internally, there are modern crisp endpapers and blanks to the front and rear. There is a small early bookseller's ticket, which has been transposed to the new front pastedown. There is an ink and pencil note regarding the work, to the front blank, part of which states this is a large paper copy that has been over cut by the binder. The front blank is browned to edges. The title page is foxed and browned and has neat and discreet repair to the inner edge. The contents have browning and foxing throughout, in varying degrees, heavier in places. There are patchy browned spots, and a few scattered pale stains, and some pale staining tot he top edges in places throughout. There is some grubbiness and smudging, and a few corner creases. The last leaf of main text is stained, and thus some early ink writings to verso have faded and washed out, see images. A leaf of 'Petition' has been bound in to rear. We can find no record for it being called for, thus has been added. It is a rare petition entitled 'A petition from the North parts of Ireland, to the Generall Assembly the 29 of July 1642. With the Act and Commission of the Assembly, answering the same. At Saint Andrewes the 6 of August 1642. The Act giving Commission to the Ministers sent to Ireland'. It looks contemporary, and is complete on one leaf, although we can find no record of it.
[16], 136, 55, [1] p. Plus leaf of Petition.
Sir John Temple (1600-1677) was serving as the Master of the Rolls and a Privy Councillor in Dublin when the rebellion broke out in October 1641. It is recorded that he performed great services in provisioning the city during the outbreak. In 1646 this account of the event was published. DNB states, "the book made an immediate and great sensation." Written from the point of view of an eyewitness and a man of authority, his statements were universally accepted at the time, and his many anecdotes of Irish brutality toward the English and the Protestants caused great indignation and led to harsh measures against the Irish by Oliver Cromwell and others. In the perspective of time Temple's book has come to be regarded more as a partisan pamphlet than an authentic history. Temple allegedly resisted its reprinting and in 1689 the Irish Parliament ordered that the book be burnt by the common hangman. According to Temple the uprising was the result of a Catholic plot fomented by Jesuits and other foreign priests. The horrible atrocities he describes are typical of any propagandistic work, but his book remains influential.
Rare first edition of Sir John Temple's famous history, PLUS rare petition.
