Selling here is Albert Krantz's 'Saxonia', published in Leipzig in 1563. A rare early edition of one of Krantz's celebrated European histories, noted at the time for their accuracy and impartiality. Famous for its first comprehensive description of the appearance of the gypsies in Europe. The first edition was published in 1520, three years after the author's death.
Bound with the criminal laws... of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, published in 1562, with intriguing woodcuts (all present).
Folio, bound in early calf boards, six raised bands to spine, page edges mottled, spine professionally rebacked at some early stage to match, the gilt ruling renewed.
The book measures 21cm by 32cm.
Complete apart from 12 leaves in the Saxonia (numbered as LIII, LIIII, XCIII, XCIIII, XCV, XCVI, XCVII, XCVIII, CLXXVII, CLXXXII, CCLCIII, CCLXIIII) which have not been bound in for some reason, and the final leaf - the contents of this leaf are provided in manuscript in an early hand.
There is also a missing blank leaf between the Saxonia and the law book.
Condition: The binding is holding firmly and is in good condition, with some general light wear to surface / extremities from handling. Contents are holding firmly and are generally in good clean condition if a little toned, with some light browning, occasional minor creases, smudges or finger marks, a few gatherings with light water stains to edges. Title leaf a little more notably soiled. Occasional early ink marginalia. One leaf slightly larger than the rest. Plain endpapers / fly leaves, edges browned.
