1738.Selling here are 3 volumes (of 4) from the first Spanish edition printed in England of Cervantes 'Don Quixote...', 1738.
Volumes 2, 3 & 4 (lacking the first vol ) retaining 51 of 68 fine copper engraved plates, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials.
The first spanish edition published in England and 'the first with a great artistic value' (Palau). "A splendid and excellent edition" (Palau 52010, Lowndes I, 401), Most of the engraved plates are by Gerard Vander Gucht after Vanderbank and two are after Hogarth. (Lowndes II, 401); " one of the editions most highly regarded by Cervantes scholars and bibliophiles ("Aguilera").

4to, 3 volumes uniformly bound in worn period gilt ruled diced calf, upper boards to vols 2 & 4 detached, vol 3 tenuously held, spines gilt ruled and lettered. Period marbled endpapers.The books measure 24.5cm by 30.5cm.The contents of the 3 volumes present are complete, meeting collation: [6], 333; vii, [5], 311; [8], 368pp, with 51 of the 68 fine engraved plates called for in all 4 volumes. The contents however are largely in very good crisp condition, some light to moderate toning and foxing but on the whole a nice copy internally, the blocks holding firmly. Small waterstain to center foredge of initial few quires in vol 2, marginal only, heavy through final 10 or so quires at rear and there encroaching well into text and a few of the plates.
