It measures approx. 31cm x 21cm x 4.2cm. Rebound with rebacked leather spine and earlier patterned paper covered boards. Boards are dulled/grubby and scuffed (surface paper chips). The spine has a bit of a twist and is little chipped to top and bottom (couple of small holes and splits). Board edges are bumped/scuffed and chipped (see photos). Internally there is a bookplate to inside ...front board and faint pencil notes. More recent endpapers to front and rear (split to inner edges). Lacking dedication leaf and one plate. The first small section of leaves have been restuck/marked to inner edges, are leaves are wrinkled/creased. Lightly grubby, with pale staining and marks. Prelim leaf has been repaired. Thumbed with occasional chips. Occasional ink letter/mark and word. Last leaf has third loss (see photos), Some wrinkles/creases. Numerous leaves are tatty and nicked to edges, a couple with tears. One leaf has a closed tear. A few plates have been trimmed and tatty/chipped (couple have large tears). Some ink words, smudges. One engraved plate has several small ink words within image. In readable and firm condition.

The "essay" is a translation of Book 1 of "Æneis".
Some of the plates are signed by Franz Cleyn, artist, and Salomon Savery, engraver.
George Sandys was a skilled poet and learned scholar. From 1621, he served as a colonial official in Virginia, and was present at Jamestown during the 1622 massacre. He had early published his translation of the first 5 books of Ovid's Metamorphoses. During his time in America he completed the translation. Thus, it is considered the first book of English verse written in America.
