IBM Industrial Model M Keyboard 1390653 - NASA Surplus. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail
Selling off the pride of my keyboard collection because I was recently laid off from my job of 19 years and have bills to pay.
IBM Industrial Keyboard Type 1390653, dated 10 May 1988. This keyboard is in fantastic original shape. It was government-used at NASA, and actually was rescued 5 years ago from a surplus electronics scrapper along with the entire IBM AT Industrial Computer rack-mou...nt kit including IBM-logo'd keyboard drawer/keyboard, rack-mount IBM AT, and an IBM EGA monitor mounted in a logo'd, enclosed shelf. The unit was wrapped in a pallet labelled "NASA" along with other electronics surplus that bore the NASA logo. Because the hard drive was dead within the computer, I am unable to determine exactly where the unit was used or what it was used for. I only know that it originated from NASA in Florida, and that within the computer, there was a wire-wrapped, hand-created ISA card on a prototype ISA board, with "Telemetry" and "Serial 001" written in sharpie marker. Pretty cool!
Prior to listing, I cleaned all of the keycaps individually, as well as giving the entire keyboard a wipe-down both within and without. I removed all of the base keys to inspect the springs, and while there were 8-10 that weren't new/shiny looking, there were no visible signs of rusting or anything that jumped out at me indicating that the springs needed to be replaced. The plastic barrel support frame shows no signs of damage or cracking.
There were only 7 broken plastic rivets on the back plate within the board, which for me, did not affect it's usage or sounds, so I opted not to bolt mod this keyboard and to keep it original (please see pictures)
I never used this board outside of its initial testing, and once it was in my possession, it stayed within my air-conditioned home. The keyboard still has all of its government inventory and IBM Operational seals intact, and is in very nice shape. I see few imperfections on the keyboard that would not have originated from the molding process itself:
* left of the Tab key, there is a small dimple in the plastic that is almost unnoticeable unless looked at from below where the light catches it
* three very small, almost imperceptable light scratches above the ESC key about halfway to the edge of the keyboard - these are not deep, as I cannot feel them with skin or fingernail, and they can only be seen at certain angles in the light
* a small nick on the bottom left face of the keyboard 1" from the bottom of the board
* 9 or 10 minor scratches on the bottom face of the board, presumably from its time bouncing around in the rack drawer during palleting and transport during its time as surplus scrap
All in all, these user-created imperfections are part and parcel with most used IBM Model M's I've seen and owned. I list them here only to illustrate that this board isn't perfect, but is in above average condition, and with its pedigree, it will hopefully be the pride of your collection as was mine.
