Anno a Christo nato, M. D. XLI. [1541]1541Selling here is an early sixteenth century Holy Bible; 'Biblia sacra Iuxta Germanum Hebraici...', published in Cologne by Arnold Birckman, 1541. This being Pagnini's 'verbum verbo' (word for word) translation of the Hebrew Old Testament.
The Pagnini Bible was the first to divide the biblical text into numbered verses and one of the first revisions of the Latin Vulgate using the original languages. He completed his Latin translation in 1528, dividing his Bible into numbered verses for easier reference. Pagninus’ translation was remarkably literal, so, despite his inelegant, even crude, style, his Bible was reprinted several times. Although more accurate than the Vulgate, and hence more useful to other translators needing help with Hebrew or Greek, Pagnini’s version was not intended to supersede the Vulgate except for purely scholarly purposes; it is now chiefly of historical interest.Folio, disbound in remains of period blind tooled calf over wooden boards, spine with four raised bands. Both boards detached, block cracked down centre. Remains of brass closures to foredges, one clasp remaining. The binding in need of restoration. The book measures 22cm by 33cm, some 9cm thick. The contents are complete, foliated, meeting collation: [6], ccclxiiii, [170]fo., with printer's woodcut device to title page. Text in Latin throughout.
Bookplates of George Ingram and Rev. Joseph W. Reeks, St George's Cathedral, to the 19th century marbled endpapers. Reeks was responsible for the setting up of the Stations of the Cross in St George’s Cathedral, and putting up the statue of St Anthony and the Infant of Prague to which he had a special devotion. Fr Reeks was also an accomplished musician and published a hymn book which was widely used.

Textblock otherwise holding firmly, contents generally in very good clean condition, some uniform light toning and just occasional minor spots or marks, the first and final few leaves with some dirt soiling, thin water stain to lower foreedge of initial quire or so. About half a dozen leaves with marginal corner or edge tears, not affecting text; scattered ink splats across fo. ccliii recto and verso of opposing leaf; small burn hole within text at fo cclv; some tears to inner egde of fo. ccxxvii and following leaf, between which the block is split; final leaf is laid down, repairing some closed and open tears running from inner edge, two of them running into a few lines of text.
