FOR BIDDERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO BUY A COMMODORE 64 AND WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MY LESSONS LEARNED If you are considering buying an 'UNTESTED' Commodore 64, you should consider the following:The seller may have tested and determined that the C64 had issues, and simply call it 'untested'.  This applies to really anything you buy, but especially old computers.Just because the red external 'Power' LED is on, do not assume that the computer is functional.  LED on simply means that the internal fuse is good and there is enough working inside the C64 to provide voltage to the power LED.  One or more of the major integrated circuits could be bad (or missing!), the circuit board could be damaged, and who knows what else. Just because the Commodore boot screen (dark blue screen, light blue border, Commodore BASIC with READY prompt) is present, do not assume that the computer is healthy.  I have seen multiple computers that presented the boot screen, only to find one or more of the following problems:  Dying/bad MOS 6581 SID sound chip, fried PLA, dying VIC-II video processor chip, dead DRAM chips, and others.  I could part this computer out and make more money - upwards of $250-$300 in parts.  But I can't bring myself to take a functional C64 that someone else can enjoy and part it out.  Here are the common prices for the major components (and what you can expect to pay for parts if you buy an untested computer and need one or more of these replaced - search eBay to confirm for yourself):MOS6581 SID - $40-80 - These have very high failure rates. Also, these can 'partially' work - I have purchased some that were represented as functional and only 'slightly' worked.  MOS906114 PLA - from $20-30 for original; $25 for modern drop-in replacements that are actually a very good choice, in my experience (lower power, more durable).  This is probably the #1 failed IC I have seen, and like SIDs, can "partially" work.  Therefore, buying one used is a risk. MOS6567 VIC-II - $50 - A weak 'Video Interface Chip' can produce a clear screen when the computer is cold, but once it begins to warm up begins to break down, and the screen has issues. The REST (3x ROMS - Kernel, Character, BASIC; 2x 6526 CIA clock ICs, 6510 CPU, misc) - upwards of $150 total;  Keyboard - $30-50; Case - $20-40 Again, all of the above is based on my experience.  Thanks!
