Two volume set.
A magnificent 2 volume set. Each are bound in contemporary marbled calf by Sharpe of Warwick (his oval label to front pastedowns), and measure approx. 28cm x 22cm x 5cm (ave). Both volumes have been rebacked, retaining most of the original backstrips, with new labels. The relaid backstrips are a little worn, see images. Else both volumes are good and firm and attractive. Internally, there are marbled endpapers to the front and rear of each. Hinges are reinforced. Book binder's ticket, and previous owner's bookplate* to the front pastedown in each. The blanks are a little foxed. The engraved frontispiece in volume I, and engraved titles in each, are foxed with offsetting. There is foxing and browning to, and around the engraved plates and maps, in varying degrees, throughout both volumes, although many remain quite clean. The folding map to the front of volume I, is a little creased, worn and grubby to the fore edge margin. There is a little creasing in places, with the odd scattered mark, smudge or mark. One text leaf has a chip (not affecting text) to the lower fore edge corner. Text (away from plates) remains largely clean and crisp. New tissue guards loosely inserted throughout.
Both volumes are complete, including directions to the binder and errata leaves to rear of each volume. Engraved by William Blake, Bartolozzi and others
16 of the plates are engraved by William Blake.
Engraved title page to each volume, 80 engraved plates and maps, folding aquatint panorama.
"In 1772 Stedman volunteered to accompany an expedition sent out by the States-General to subdue the revolted negroes in Surinam, or Dutch Guiana. This service, in which he was employed for five years, gave him the opportunity of his life. His narrative is a model of what such a book should be. Its rules for marching, and fighting, amid tropical swamps anticipate those laid down for the Ashanti Expedition. The field of his curiosity embraced not only all branches of natural history, but also economical and social conditions. His description of the cruelties practised upon the negroes, and of the moral deterioration resulting to their masters, forms one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have ever penned. While he did his duty as a soldier in the pay of Holland, he does not disguise his sympathy with the rebels. Not the least curios thing is the story of his relations with Joanna, the slave who nursed him when sick and bore him a son. The freedom of the son was granted to the father by the Government of Surinam, in recognition of his 'Humanity and gallantry'; but the boy died at sea as a midshipman in the British Navy" DNB.
