The trial was reported in the contemporary pamphlet press. The official version was published by the government censor of the time, Gilbert Mabbott, and came out in three parts on 23, 25, and 29 January (This is part Two ONLY :- Jan 25.).

THE TRIAL OF CHARLES I, printed in London as it was unfolding just a short distance away.

"It contains narrative and the direct speech of the trial participants. Contrary to what can be imagined, the proceedings are not reported with republican bias. The speeches and dialogue of both the prosecution (the Lord President and Solicitor), and the accused (Charles I), strike one for their authenticity. Indeed so strong is the king's rebuttal of the accusations that a short time after the trial the government forbad all further publication of Mabbott's account."

"Rare contemporary daily account of the trial on charges of high treason and "other high crimes" of Charles I of England, printed while the trial was ongoing. Charges to which Charles refused to enter a plea, claiming that no court had jurisdiction over a monarch. He believed that his own authority to rule had been given to him by God and by the traditions and laws of England when he was crowned and anointed, and that the power wielded by those trying him was simply that of force of arms"Charles was ultimately convicted and was beheaded only days later on January 30, 1649.
