6 Finely Bound Gilt Decorated Leather Bindings.
6 Volumes, a complete set all dated 1812.
This set is sumptuously bound in full burgundy grained calf with elaborate gilt decorations. There are no signatures or binder's tickets but these early 19th century bindings are in the same class as the finest Sangorski & Sutcliffe or Joseph Zaehnsdorf binding.
Each volume measures 12¼" x 10¼".
The set is unpaginated, each volume is approximately 2" thick.
The spines have 8 raised bands with the titles and decorations in gold leaf. The front and rear boards have a gilt ruled blind stamped centre panel with outer gilt dentelles within triple gilt ruled lines. The inner front and rear boards are decorated with gilt dentelles within ruled lines with blue marbled endpapers. The edges of the boards are tooled with wavy gilt lines. All pages edges are gold leaf.
Volume 1 - Genesis to Deuteronomy.
Volume 2 - Joshua to Esther.
Volume 3 - Job to Isaiah.
Volume 4 - Jeremiah to Malachi.
Volume 5 - Matthew to Acts.
Volume 6 - Romans to Revelation.
The contents are very clean with hardly any foxing. The front bottom hinge/gutter of Vol 1 has a small split, the rear top hinge/gutter of Vol 6 also has a small split (see photos), a little scuffing, otherwise, the boards are all firmly attached and the bindings and contents are tight, sound and very clean.
