The cup and saucer in the Blossoms in Relief pattern.This antique set is dated from June 1876, and is decorated in an Aesthetic Erastyle that was highly popular during the Victorian Period. Edwin James DrewBodley is known to have made some of the finest examples of Aesthetic porcelainin existence, and this set i...s no exception! The cup and saucer feature a handpainted, Japanese style floral Plum / Cherry Blossoms design in high relief, with lovely blue and green leaves, a thin gold gilding around the rims and amolded twig handle. Quality porcelain was produced by Bodley from 1875 to 1892. EdwinJames Drew Bodley worked at Samuel Alcock's Old Hill Pottery at Burslem, whichhad been divided into separate china and earthernware factories in 1867. Thechina works (now called Crown Works) was taken over first by Bodley andDiggory, and then by Bodley & Son, until Edwin J. D. Bodley began to dobusiness under his own name in June of 1875. Bodley produced fine qualityporcelains with Oriental-style flowers.
