You arebidding on a large museum quality bowl by celebrated mid-Century potter Clyde Burt. DESCRIPTION: This magnificent vintage bowl from ClydeBurt is a rounded form with gently flared walls, a wide rim and a voluminousinterior space. The latter is adorned with a mesmerizing quintessential Burt designcomprised of alternating rows of vertical burnt orange and beige lines setagainst a dark brown background. The rimand center are solid brown and nicely “frame” the decorative pattern. The brown glaze extends to the underside ofthe bowl. Thishighly collectible master work measures 13 ¾” in diameter at the rim and stands2 7/8” tall- and displays nicely LARGE. It is in excellent condition- no chips, cracks or repairs- and has thepotter’s incised initials in the recessed interior of the unglazed foot ring. This is a no reserve auction. ABOUT CLYDE BURT: Clyde Burt was born in Melrose, Ohio in1922. He studied at the Fort Wayne ArtSchool, Cape Cod School of Art and then worked with Maija Grotell at TheCranbrook Academy. He taught at theDayton Art Institute and the Fort Wayne School of Art prior to forming apartnership with John Nartker (as Burt & Nartker in Clay.) The two artists marketed their workprimarily in Michigan and the Chicago area. Burt exhibited at the Ceramic Nationals from 1954-1958. Exhibitions were held in prestigiousgalleries including the McCormick Exposition Center in Chicago and the MadisionGallery in New York City. His work is inthe permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and theChicago Museum of Art among others. Burtdied in 1981 and the intervening years have seen interest in his work soaramong knowing collectors of mid-Century studio pottery.
