Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:847793Age: Pre-1800
Original/Reproduction: Antique Original
Original Description:

this blade is an excellent example of the very famous and rare kane no tsume (crab claw) hamon that was first created and perfected by the most famous sukesada ever Yosazaemon Sukesada. Not even yosazaemons adopted son Genbei produced swords with this hamon.   I am not aware of the masters such as schichibei or jiruzaemon or any other producing this hamon so well during this time period.    (if someone knows of an example please let me know) I have searched every... example I could find.
This hamon is very rare in the early to mid 1500's and as far as I know only produced by Yosazaemon and his namesake son during their active times (they both were qactive for long careers, most of the 1500's). They are rated Saijo saku and JoJo saku rescpectfully. Hikobei and Yosozaemon are a very rare father son duo that both were rated at the Grandmaster level of Saijo Saku. That doesn't happen often if ever.
Many copied later especially after 1600 but they are very different in quality and shape in general. their swords have the look of the Shinto period.
The early sukesada masters were also rated Owazamono for great sharpness. The reputation of the founding masters of the sukesada sent into motion one of the most successful family sword making dynasty in sword making history. with over 60 generations. even there mass produced bundle blades(of which this is not one of) had a nickname in Japanese that meant SWEET CUTTERS and they were beloved by the samurai that were actually fighting in the greatest wartime of Japanese history. the Sengoku Period.
Winchester won the West..... Sukesada won the East!!!
Comes in great Court fittings of execellent quality and all fits together nice and tight. No work to be done!!

koshirae length= 62.5 cmblade = 52.5 cmnagasa= 41.1 cmsori=1.1cm
excellent example of a very rare and famous hamon by one of the early sukesada masters. resembling the work of late shodia or nidia Yosazaemon Sukesada.beautiful well forged hada. in very good polish with very minimal ware. there is one tiny flaw that looks like it was caused by a tiny nick not an opening. this blade has master work jigane.the steel is beautiful silvery blue color associated with Yosazaemon and it does have utsuri only associated with earlier blades and with lots of jinie. This blade also exhibits wet steel, a steel that seems like it is oily or wet in certain natural light. A sign of masterwork.

Yosozaemon was known to make swords with half suguba (straight hamon) and half crabclaw. It sure looks like the owner just cut the suguba part off this sword and left the crabclaw.
if the nthk papered this sword to either generation yosozaemon someone would be getting a great deal!!!( the nbtk rarely give their opinion of individual smith if left unsigned, but the Nthk often will) even if they didn't I would go out on a limb and guarantee this sword was made by one of the great sukesada masters. It is just that nice compared to many other sukesada's ive observed over the years. Therefore this should be priced just about right.
500 YEARS OLD!!!
THIS SWORD IS EVEN MORE AMAZING IN PERSON!!! YOU HAVE TO SEE IT IN HAND!!
comes with NBTHK tokubetsu paper.
I also added a yanagawa school signed kozuka with solid silver kozuka knife, that will be included as well as a tachi style tsuba with hand carved vines (14 kt gold plated)(it is edo period and was made of brass, and I had it personally plated by a professional) it looks even better than tsuba pictured and fits perfect) but either tsuba works. It will come with both tsubas. 2 weeks return policy just pay return ship, and item has to be received in the same condition.
